We believe that God created humans to have fellowship with Him, but they defied God by sinfully going their own way. As a result, we need God’s saving grace to end our alienation from God. Salvation comes only through God’s grace-not human effort-and must be received personally by repentance and faith.

Re(Focus)

August 2017

I am not sure where you are at in your journey of self-discovery.  Maybe you are on the front end trying to figure out who you are.  Maybe you are on the back end trying to remember who you were meant to be.  Or maybe you are somewhere in between trying to close that gap between who you are and who you want to be.  No matter where you find yourself, I want you to experience the joy of discovering who you are and the freedom of discovering who you are not.

It won’t be easy.  There are no shortcuts, but God has not given up on you.  So, don’t give up on yourself either.  It’s never too late to be who you might have been if you focus or refocus upon Him.

Ride the Divide

June 2017 - July 2017

There is a divide that exist between knowing about God and His word and obeying God and His word.  This series is about bridging the gap that exist between where we are and where God wants us to be.   We want to ride that divide.  We want our life to bridge that gap in order to make a measurable and meaningful difference in life.  We don’t really know truth until we start obeying truth.  And perhaps there is no better example to consider how that plays out practically than what is laid out in the Gospel of Luke.

Woke

July 2017

The Collective, the Student Ministry of FWBC, went to summer camp and were challenged to wake up to the message of Jesus Christ.  They learned within community of other students to go all in for Jesus; to focus on the freedom of a bright future as provided by the gospel.  Below are 2 messages.  One from the camp speaker, John Decker,  that was shared the week the students returned with our entire congregation.  The other is from our student pastor, Ben Hays, the week following in an effort to get woke and stay woke together.

Jesus Greater Than

April 2017 - June 2017

So many look without truly seeing.  They are half awake, half aware or even half alive.  Going through the motions of life, yet lacking vitality in life.  And as a result, they see less, experience less, enjoy less.  We are in such a hurry that we don’t fully appreciate the beauty that is right before our eyes.  So, it is within our relationship with God.  It’s possible that we give God a passing glance instead of hallowing His name.  It’s possible that we have settled for a god that fits in the constraints of our mind instead of the God who is able to do immeasurably more than all we can even imagine.  It’s possible that we rush by with a casually and really miss worshipping the God of wonders authentically.  Jesus is greater than all else.  Don't miss Him!

Jesus Changes Everything

March 2017

The Gospel of Luke has sought to challenge and change our perspective.  Instead of having a self-sufficient worldview where man struggles to find his own purpose and power in life, Luke reveals the message of Jesus which changes everything.

Great Expectations

December 2016

Let’s face it, there is a lot of pressure upon us all during this season.  The question becomes, why?  Why do we do all this?  There are many things we  will  do and experience this time of year,  but shouldn’t this season provoke greater expectations than the cultural conundrum that leaves us with a holiday hangover ?

We know the right answer.  Christmas is about the birth of Christ.  We do this to celebrate Jesus.   Jesus is the reason for the season.  We are all too familiar with the Christmas story and what we are expected to say.  Christmas is the gift of Jesus.  Christmas is that gift which promotes perpetual joy, peace on earth and good will toward man.  However, just like the first Christmas, we struggle (within all the busyness) to find room for Christ.

This season should be filled with great expectations, but it starts by hearing from Heaven the real sounds of Christmas.

Love Works

September 2016 - November 2016

There is so much negative in our world these days.

We have seen it so many times before.  Words or actions inflame deeply rooted hostilities and then chaos ensues.  These images create overwhelming anxiety and fuels even greater unrest.  Every night, the headlines are cluttered with violence, insult and corruption.  We are inundated with liberal bias, conservative rants and bleak outlooks which forecast things getting worse before they ever get better.  As a result, we tend to fixate on the disturbing conduct and dysfunctional lifestyle of the few while overlooking or even ignoring the reasonable efforts of the many that seek real peace, liberty and justice for all.

What should be the response of the church?  It is easy to be frustrated by all that we see.  No one likes to see what is happening all around us.  However, the trouble in our world is more than repulsive and repugnant.  The state of our nation is disheartening and terribly sad.  It breaks my heart to see all that I see.

Therefore, the church needs a better response than merely wagging a finger in disapproval at a culture that seems content to wallow in the muck and mire of the world.  Instead, we should be on the front line engaging our culture with the truth of the gospel in the power of His Spirit boldly proclaiming that hope is alive while demonstrating that love works.

It is time for the church to do something about all of this crazy.  Sometimes we are caught up waiting for the movement of God to do something special.  What if we could change our perspective and realized that as “the body of Christ” we are that special movement God.  What would happen in your family, this community and this nation if we properly understood that God has saved us and raised us up for such a time as this?

One Walk

July 2016 - August 2016

Even more important than the light you see with your eyes is the light that Christ brings to your heart, giving your life the understanding and meaning only He can give.  Therefore, you must learn to live in Christ.  That is, you must learn to walk worthy in a real relationship with Him.  It is a personal relationship which relates practically in your life.  Simply put,  as you walk in love and walk as light you will walk worthy in life.

One More

June 2016 - July2016

Every week there seems to be a national tragedy that causes us to shake our heads in disbelief.  Terror has crept in and is creating chaos, instilling fear and dividing humanity into polarized factions all over the world.  The political wrangling expends a ton of energy measured in billions of dollars and 24/7 media coverage, but it only seems to achieve greater division and disappointment.  The struggle of raising a family in this environment is real.  Our society seems to be unraveling, our culture is evolving rapidly (almost morphing into something unrecognizable to us) and the hope of this nation to be the United States of America is ever dwindling.  The hostile rhetoric and increasing violence exposes more than a loss of civility, it reveals that we are a fractured people that is spiraling into great brokenness.  However, we must not lose hope by losing heart.  We must never underestimate the power of the Gospel.  In the first few chapters of this great letter to the Ephesians, Paul shared the vast wealth of Christ, but now in the remaining chapters he teaches us how to walk in Christ.

ONE

May 2016 - June 2016

Three years ago, Fairfield West Baptist Church began a campaign of generosity entitled "All In" designed to remove growth barriers within our church.  Together we committed to change the trajectory of our ministry by adding additional parking, providing a safer children's wing and expanding our adult educational facilities.  The campaign was wildly successful and we have achieved our goals, however we recognized that our capital campaign was less about campus improvements and more about the gospel.   As the campaign comes to an end, Paul's letter to the Ephesians solidifies our resolve to be that one body serving the one God in one faith.  In essence, Jesus is The One and as His people we need to walk as one.

Made New

March 2016 - April 2016

New is exciting! Sure, there is a level of comfort in the routine; structure provides a sense of security. But new has an invigorating smell about it. New is not just speaking of different, new is innovative, fresh and stimulating. In fact, Scripture characterizes our life in Christ as new!

Reactions

January 2016 - March 2016

One may wrongly think that, “it doesn’t matter how I live my life or what I do.” “Can I be a part of something significant and make a difference with my life?” The world is so big and we are so small, as Christians, does it really matter what we chose to do with our own lives? Within this second part study of Acts, we discover how the working faith of the common Christian faithfully works.

Actions

September 2015 - November 2015

It is important to understand that established programs of the church are the result of a local assembly committing themselves first to Christ and then to each other to form a local congregation. This study of the book of Acts will rightly identify how the Church is to be a ministry of real action.

What's the Big Idea

July 2016 - August 2016

If you’ve ever read through the Minor Prophets, you’ll realize that it’s not the easiest read in the Bible.

Perhaps this is why so little is ever mentioned about these concise little writings tucked at the end of the Old Testament. However, we don’t need to be intimidated, we just simply need to slowly move from wading in ankle deep water to the deep end of the pool, for there is nothing like being immersed to such a degree that your whole being is impacted by the Word of God.

The Unfolding Story

April 2016 - June 2016

Life is the tale of two stories; one is feeble and frail while the other is eternal and enduring. The tiny one, the story of us, is as brief as a blink of an eye. This study of Genesis 22-50 identifies that we can either cling to the starring roles in our little itty-bitty story of us or we can opt to exchange our fleeting moment in the spotlight for a supporting role in the beautiful epic saga which is the story of God. The choice is yours.

Through the study of Romans, the Apostle Paul anticipates our dilemma and offers us a roadmap to enjoy the freedom of the gospel for it is one thing to embrace the remedy and receive the gospel cure.  It is quite another to understand our new identity and be renewed by the gospel cure.
